A JUST SOLUTION TO THE GOVERNANCE CRISIS AT UNITED WORLD COLLEGE OF SOUTH EAST ASIA IN SINGAPORE

We, the undersigned, petition the United World College of South East Asia, its Board of Governors, its staff members and its Head of College to find a just solution to the current turmoil at the school we love so dearly.

We, as UWCSEA alumni, are gravely concerned about the situation at the school and hope for a beneficial and speedy resolution, with the best results for all parties involved. We take to heart the concerns of the inspiring, knowledgeable and world-class teachers who have educated us, and realize that the situation is far more complicated than any second-hand information that we receive.

It is our firm belief that by inappropriately benchmarking salaries and reducing gratuities without a reasonable offset to address teacher's retirement concerns, the pool of highly qualified teachers will be smaller, thus leading to significant decline in the academic standards, pastoral care and the quality and scope of the Extra Curricular Activity (ECA) programme that can be delivered. We urge the chief concerns to be openly discussed and made available to the students, staff, parents, alumni of UWCSEA and the UWC International Office in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, we urge all parties involved to build up on better communications and greater trust between all stakeholders of UWCSEA.

We kindly ask Andrew Bennett, our Head of College, John Underwood, Mr. Bennett's deputy, John Kirkham, the Board of Governors chairman, and staff who have resigned following the governance crisis to reconsider their decision. The petitioners firmly believe that without the excellent current staff that UWCSEA has, the College will suffer tremendously and its reputation will tarnish. Without the teachers, the College will be left with nothing and one of the strongest assets of UWCSEA is the hard-working teachers who only wish for the best for their students.
