Action on Travellers sign now

The Cambridge Evening News has launched a campaign calling on deputy prime minister John Prescott to take Action on Travellers.
Our campaign is being backed by Gypsy and Traveller groups, residents, farmers and councillors across the UK and was sparked by the situation at Smithy Fen near Cottenham in Cambridgeshire which has threatened to tear a peaceful community apart.
Travellers who have nowhere to go in the UK set up illegal sites which become overcrowded and put pressure on local settled residents and facilities.
When local authorities try to take action on the illegal sites they are faced with long, drawn out public inquiries which cost the tax payer hundreds of thousands of pounds and help no-one but lawyers.
There have been reports of anti social behaviour in the Traveller community but most just want to live in security and peace so they can earn a living and send their children to school.
Councils and police need real powers to tackle the growth of illegal sites but this must go hand in hand with a duty on councils to identify land for Travellers to live on legally. The Government must recognise the growing problem and take action and it must make available sufficient funding for councils to provide for the travelling community.
To read more about our campaign visit and type: Action on Travellers.

We demand that John Prescott,

*Create new laws so that local authorities and police have real powers to prevent illegal sites being set up.

*Create new legislation to ensure that local authorities make provision for workable, permanent sites for the travelling community.

*Provide sufficient money and support to councils so that they can provide facilities for these sites.

I live and work in Cottenham. As part of my job I obtain planning consents, when I am asked to. It is just plain wrong that there is this backdoor route to obtaining planning consent simply by occupation of the land. Where do you live? High Street Cottenh
