ARLINGTON HOUSING AND BUILDING CRISIS PETITION sign now

A PETITION TO THE COUNTY BOARD TO STOP THE DESTRUCTION OF HOUSING HERE IN ARLINGTON

We the undersigned residents, voters, and neighbors of housing victims in Arlington County call upon the County Board as an emergency measure and act of moral responsibility, in response to our housing crisis, to deny for as long as necessary all permits for demolishing (tearing-down) any existing structure in the county, including existing rental housing, multi-family housing, duplex housing, existing detached single-family housing; townhouses; and commercial structures; and to declare a moratorium for the same period on the approval of rental housing conversion to condominiums. The moratorium must stay in effect for as long as it takes to provide adequate housing for Arlington residents, and to develop the requirements and ordinances that will make this possible.

In the past three years, Arlington County has lost 47 \% of its affordable housing stock. We believe that residents who earn less than $40,000 a year should be able to continue to live in Arlington; that retired people on a fixed income continue to be able to live here; and that families with children, seniors, teachers, police, firefighters, nurses and other medical personnel, public employees, military, and blue collar workers find housing that they can afford in Arlington. Arlington must remain a diverse community; where persons of varied ethnic, economic, age, and education can live side by side; and not a place exclusively for the rich.

Your friends and neighbors, and quite possibly you yourself are being adversely impacted by the loss of housing that you can afford, the conversion of the places you rent into high priced condominiums, the destruction of apartment buildings to build high rises and town houses that most people cant afford, and the destruction of single family homes to be replaced by McMansions. If we cant afford to live here, where will we go? It is not only the ethical responsibility of our public officials to put a stop to this; it is their, and our, moral duty.

We are calling upon the Arlington County Board as an emergency measure and as an act of moral responsibility, in response to a general affordable housing crisis, to deny for as long as necessary all permits for demolishing (tearing-down) any existing structure in the county.

This total moratorium includes existing rental housing, multi-family housing, duplex housing, existing detached single-family housing; townhouses; and commercial structures; and to declare a moratorium for the same period on the approval of rental housing conversion to condominiums. This moratorium must stay in effect for as long as it takes to provide adequate housing for all Arlington residents, and to develop the requirements and ordinances that will make this possible.

We are petitioning the County Board to initiate this action and maintain it in place until citizens, owners and developers can agree upon effective ways to preserve Arlington's existing housing stock; the county can develop through an emergency task force a comprehensive plan to put in place and maintain a policy of no net loss of affordable housing units; a policy of preserving existing single family home neighborhoods; and a policy of preserving existing green space.
