Clinton Corners Residents Have a Right to Be Safe sign now

On Tuesday August 17th, the following Town of Clinton residents signed a petition for lowered speeds and sidewalks in the Historic Hamlet of Clinton Corners at a Community Visioning Session held at the East Clinton Firehouse by County Legislator Joel Tyner and former East Clinton Fire Chief Don Estes:

Jim and Helen Ashton, Tim Beam, Robert Bird, Stephanie Bonk, Gary Davis, Robert and Stacey Higgins, Bill and Linda Hogan, John and Lisa Lacey, Judy Malstrom, Patricia McDermott, Paul Schwarze, Chris Scott, Bernie Seifert, J.J. Sinnott, Richard and Rosemarie Valentine, and Arthur Weiland.

Specifically, the petition asked for speeds to be lowered in the hamlet of Clinton Corners to 30 miles per hour as follows-- on Salt Point Turnpike from Schultzville Road to Hollow Road, and on Clinton Corners Road from the middle of the hamlet down to its intersection with Hibernia Road.

The petition also asks for sidewalks in the hamlet as well on Salt Point Turnpike-- from Stewart's to the Clinton Corners post office.

Clinton Corners resident Bill Hogan of Salt Point Turnpike explains:

"Speed in the hamlet is a major concern. We have many pedestrians, runners, and cyclists using our roads. There are many children standing on corners waiting that are truly not safe waiting for school buses. There are also several places where folks turn in and out of to go into such places as our Post Office, A-1Automotive, Upton Lake Christian Academy, the Fire Department, Rec Park, Agway, and Stewart's. A great start was made a few years ago when that terrible curve by the Post Office was modified. We have had a great reduction in the accident rate there since then . However there is a very limited space for automobiles, pedestrians with and without baby carriages and bicyclist to share the road. Reducing the speed would help a great deal. In addition we have many large trucks coming through the hamlet often in excess of the current speed limit of 40 mph which is too fast to begin with.

Lowering the speed limit to 30 mph from Schultzville Road to Hollow Road would be a great help. The speed limit on Clinton Corners Road should also be lowered to 30 mph. Schultzville road itself has a high amount of pedestrian use. Reducing the rate on a portion of that road would be helpful as well.

Since the Parkway closing, all of there roads have seen a significant increase in traffic. While everyone wants to get to their destination as quickly as possible safety should be our utmost concern. In addition if we want to maintain the quality of our hamlets we need to always address issues that will continue to make them desirable places to live."

Nearby resident Stephanie Bonk of Bulls Head Road adds: "I saw two kids get hit walking on the shoulder of Salt Point Turnpike just after a ball game. I see mothers with carriages and younger children walking there too-- it's only a matter of time before someone gets hit again if something isn't done."

County DPW Commissioner Michael Murphy recently stated that it is necessary for the Clinton Town Board to pass a resolution asking for speeds to be lowered in the hamlet as specified in order for it to happen.
