Continuation of asian art classes at carleton univeristy

The field of Asian Art, especially that of modern and contemporary Asian Art, is a fairly new and unexplored field that has numerous openings for students thinking about pursuing graduate school. As Carleton University students we are privileged to have access to informative and interesting classes by one of the few specialists in that field, Professor Ming Tiampo. However, Professor Tiampo will be leaving the country for 3 years to conduct research as of September 2008. If no replacement is found for that period of time, current and future Carleton students will pass on a valuable opportunity to deepen their knowledge of art history and to gain insights, and perhaps an interest, in this emerging field, thus possibly missing out on opportunities to present novel and original thesis proposals when applying for graduate school.

Carletons Art History program offers many classes outside traditional European Art classes, such as those on Aboriginal Art and on Asian Art. By removing the Asian Art classes, the possible field of studies available to students is also diminished. We therefore would like the Faculty to strongly consider hiring a replacement for Professor Tiampo between 2008 and 2011 so that these opportunities are not lost.
