End CPP Investment in Burma's Military Dictatorship sign now

Recognizing that the Government of Canada, through the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) Investment Board, currently holds investments of more than $1 billion (according to CPP Investment Board Canadian Equity Holdings and Foreign Equity Holdings statements, March 31, 2008) in the following companies supporting the Burmese military dictatorship,
-Ivanhoe Mines: $59 million
-TransCanada Corporation: $229 million
-CHC Helicopter Corporation: $21 million
-Total S.A.: $293 million
-Chevron Corporation: $265 million
-Power Corporation of Canada : $263 million

Recalling that on December 13, 2007 the Canadian Government enacted the toughest sanctions in the world against Burma (Special Economic Measures (Burma) Regulations),

Further recalling that these regulations include a ban on new investment in Burma by Canadian persons and companies,

Alarmed by the continued investment of Canadian taxpayers' CPP contributions in companies supporting the cruel Burmese military dictatorship and its gross human rights violations,

Deeply convinced that all support for the Burmese military dictatorship must be ended in order to reach a lasting solution for the suffering people of Burma, including hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons and hundreds of thousands of refugees who have been forced to seek refuge in other countries,

WE, THE CITIZENS AND RESIDENTS OF CANADA,

Call on the Government of Canada and all elected Members of Parliament immediately (upon resumption of Parliament in November, 2008) to draft, approve, and enact legislation requiring the CPP Investment Board to remove the following companies (Equity Holdings listing names in parentheses) from its investment portfolio:
-Ivanhoe Mines Limited (Ivanhoe Mines Ltd)
-Ivanhoe Energy Limited (Ivanhoe Energy Inc)
-TransCanada Corporation (TransCanada Corp)
-CHC Helicopter Corporation (CHC Helicopter Corp A)
-Total S.A. (Total Fina Elf B)
-Chevron Corporation (Chevron Corp)
-Power Corporation of Canada (Power Corp of Canada Subvtg).

As Canadians, we insist not to be forced by our government to invest in our future at the expense of the people of Burma.
