Farrell's "Northern Ireland: The Orange State" sign now

We, the undersigned, address this petition to Pluto Press:

We thank you for, in the past, publishing Michael Farrell's book, "Northern Ireland: The Orange State." However, we are disappointed that it has been completely out of print for a few years, and especially because it is no longer even listed in your catalog and it's status is not even "Print on Demand."

"Northern Ireland: The Orange State" is an amazing resource for people working for peace with justice in Ireland; for people who are trying to advance an anti-sectarian, anti-partition, democratic socialist agenda. It's a very well researched and written book, the sort that both provides an introduction for new-comers to this issue and provides a thoughtful analysis worth reading for long-time observers of N. Ireland politics. The chronological, detailed, and analytical style used by Farrell is easy to read and thought-provoking. It offers plenty of well-documented details of how N. Ireland was established and maintained through a sectarian and often violent suppression of democracy, which was at least winked at by the British government. It also acts as a labor history of Northern Ireland; describes the occasional and small, but significant, acts of dissent from Unionism among the Protestants; and also recounts the occasional expressions of sectarianism by Catholics, nationalists and republicans.

His fairly unique, well-developed and fact-based analysis of the class and national questions in N. Ireland is very valuable. He had put this analysis into practice in the late 1960s and early 1970s in People's Democracy, the student, left-wing and militant section of the Civil Rights Movement. It is an analysis which needs to inform our approach to resolving the conflict there today. The well-documented facts in his book are also necessary to increase understanding among Protestants and unionists of what Catholics and nationalists went through under Stormont.

As someone who was very involved in the events of the late 60s and early 70s, Farrell's analysis should be read by anyone working on the issue of N. Ireland.

We respectfully request that Pluto Press either fully upgrade this book and do another printing ASAP, or at the very least upgrade it to "Print on Demand," and list it in your catalog so that if there are enough requests, there will be a printing.

We pledge to either buy a copy, and/or recommend it to friends, family, and fellow activists.
