House Resolution H. RES. 782 Threatening UN Dues Over Iran sign now

Legislation introduced by Congressman Zach Wamp (R-TN 3rd), allegedly expresses the sense of the House of Representatives that:

1) The U.N. Security Council should sanction Iran for its Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) noncompliance; and

2) If the Security Council does not sanction Iran, the Secretary of State may withhold U.S. contributions to the United Nations until the Security Council takes proper action to return Iran to NPT compliance.

We, the undersigned, hereby express our utmost indignation by the action taken by the honorable Congressman from Tennessee to introduce this legislation on the ground that it

1) Is based on a false premise, and

2) Recommends taking an illegal action for the sole purpose of coaxing an international body into submitting to its will.

Basis for the introduction of this bill is on the ambiguous charge that Iran is in violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty. If that is in reference to the uranium enrichment activity, then the honorable congressman will be relieved to find that the later is a central tenet guaranteed by article 4 of the treaty as an "inalienable right" granted to all non-nuclear states. It is one of the major incentives to sign on to NPT rather than accept an apartheid system that rewards nuclear states without any practical benefits for the non-nuclear members. The right to utilize nuclear technology without developing nuclear weapons is vital for the treaty to remain credible. As a signatory state, Iran is fully entitled to develop nuclear energy which includes enriching uranium for peaceful use.

The ludicrous notion of withholding U.S. contributions to the United Nations until the Security Council takes proper action to return Iran to NPT compliance is self evident. As stated above, Iran is already acting within its legal rights as granted by the treaty, thus mere suggestion of such a belligerent act to cajole an international body into submission is outright appalling.
