LABOUR LEADERSHIP BALLOT sign now

*IN SIGNING THIS PETITION I AGREE THAT NOMINATION PAPERS SHOULD BE SENT IMMEDIATELY TO ALL LABOUR MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT*

This morning the Labour Party NEC voted in support of new General Secretary Ray Collins decision not to send out Ballot Papers to Members of Parliament in advance of next weeks Party Conference in Manchester.

I am signing this petition to the General Secretary as I believe that the NECs decision is grossly dismissive of genuine and legitimate concerns from the grass roots-up regarding the leadership of our Party.

The rules are very clear and were written, after all, to protect the Partys internal democracy; they must not be manipulated when it suits the leadership.

MPs have a key role within our Party democracy in being able to trigger a vote at conference on this key issue. Even more important than this, though, is the need for an open and far reaching debate about the future of the Party. We reject utterly any suggestion that the next election is already lost, but we do believe that it is ours to lose and a clear, coherent and confident vision for Britains future is currently lacking. This cannot continue.

It is absolutely true that the Labour Party must not waver from its historic responsibilities to our country and to those in greatest need, but the NEC blocking a legitimate debate about the best vehicle and means of delivering on that responsibility is not the way forward.

Furthermore, it is unacceptable that Regional Directors of the Party have today been directed to contact CLPs to drum up support for pro-leadership resolutions to be submitted at our conference. The mechanism for having this legitimate debate [the distribution of ballots] is being denied to normal party members and our representative members of Parliament. We demand that they be sent out immediately.

This petition is for genuine members of the Labour Party only and I understand that my vote will only be counted if I also submit my Labour Party Membership number and CLP Name, but that these will not be displayed on the petition. This way, although my vote is anonymous, there will be a record that I have taken part in the petition as a legitimate member of the Party.

Once the petition reaches 500 signatures I understand that it will be shown by a senior MP, in cconfidence, to the General Secretary. The names of signatories will not be disclosed and the purpose of the meeting will be simply to verify that those who have signed are legitimate members and that the petition represents a genuine concern by party members on this issue.

The poll will close at midnight on Friday 19th September 2008 on the eve of conference.

Ordinary members will not be silenced.
