The TANF-CDC (Early Childhood Education Careers Welfare to Work Program) has been ELIMINATED from the California Department of Educations (CDE) Child Care & Development Fund State Plan although still included in Senate Bill 1 (3rd Ex. Sess.).

The TANF-CDC program fills a unique and critical need:
Program goal: increase the number of qualified child development teachers and allow TANF recipients and their families in becoming to become economically self-sufficient.

Without TANF-CDC support, the 967 California Community College students benefiting from this program are at risk of dropping out of college and hence the Early Childhood Education (ECE) field.

Diversity in the ECE workforce is critical. Then TANF-CDC program increases the number of multi-cultural and multi-lingual educators in California.

The Impact of Program Elimination at Community and Statewide Levels:

TANF-CDC participants are a vulnerable population at risk of dropping out of college and out of the ECE field. Loosing these participants would potentially deprive the ECE field of professionally qualified employees who are close to achieving an ECE credential.

TANF-CDC operates at 49 colleges serving urban areas and rural communities. With the loss of the program, service capacity will be reduced in many regions throughout the state.

As Californias economic crisis worsens, more people will return to college to gain education for new career opportunities. The loss of this program will eliminate a much needed source of support for TANF recipients pursuing the important field of Early Childhood Education.
