Purpose: Request to assemble a Transit Task Force


On June 20th Council decided to cancel a planned transit task force after having done much preliminary work to get it underway. Transportation issues in the Greater Toronto Area are going to factor very highly in the years to come for all levels of government, and we need to put together a solid plan to integrate New Tecumseth properly into this network. With the cost of fuel continuing to rise endlessly, there will be more demand for transit. Increasingly home buyers are identifying good Public Transit as a factor in their purchasing decision, and if we are not well served and integrated into the broader transportation network our home values will suffer. During the election, transit came up several times and most of the councilors that got elected expressed the need for transit, but also the difficulties it presents. We need this transit task force to start us down the road of building a modern, integrated and cost effective transit system, which will serve current and future residents. These things are not done overnight, and short term measures like taxi subsidies will not get us to where we need to be 10, 15 and 20 years down the road.

In order to have transit tomorrow there needs to be a task force today:

We the undersigned request that the Town of New Tecumseth Assemble a Transit Task Force, that would have the express purpose to 1) Research other jurisdictions transit systems 2) meet with stakeholder groups 3) Meet and discuss options with potential transit partners 4) Develop short, medium and long term plans 5) Propose this plan to council for implementation 6) Transition to a Transit Sub Committee of Council, for the implementation / operation phase.
