Return Our Punctuation sign now

Dear the administration team of,

The following is a petition regarding the removal of certain punctuation features on your fanfiction archive. We, the undersigned, request their return in order to improve our experience viewing and using the site.

We consider the removal of these legitimate characters to be an irresponsible decision, hampering the user experience of the website, for the following reasons:

1. We are left unable to refer to websites, email addresses and even some fandoms correctly. This is frustrating for users who wish to refer to in their author notes, or those who have received illustrations for their work that they wish to share with other users. Certain fandoms, such as .hack//SIGN, are no longer able to be referred to. In addition, users may wish to use these characters in their work for a specific reason - perhaps the name of an object or character requires the use of the special characters, for example in a science-fiction based fandom, or in a story where a character reads an email.

2. Many authors use emoticons in their author notes. While they are abused often in script format fiction, which is disallowed anyway, in author notes they can help give the author a little personality - this would be their normal, informal way of internet speak, and in that way, readers can identify with the author.

3. Many users feel the need to use these characters to express a time difference between scenes. While horizontal rules may be used, not all file formats support them, and the removal of the special characters upon uploading means that the authors must relocate where they left such a scene break and reinsert it. This can become frustrating for those with long stories.

4. Spacing rules have been disregarded. A published novel features indentations, and uses paragraph spacing to indicate a new scene. prevents us from using any extra spacing, and indentations are reduced to a single space. Many authors consider this as a violation of freedom.

5. On occasion, authors may wish to include footnotes relating to certain parts of the fanfic, and will usually use a special character to show that. An example of a published author who employs such a technique is Terry Pratchett. Asterixes are also used to mark footnotes in many documents, formal and informal, every day in modern English.

6. Many users have used special characters to portray an alternate manner of speech, such as a simulated form of speech or a telepathic form.

Our requests are inoffensive and simply request the return of our literary freedom. If they were to be fulfilled, they would not harm the audience of the website or the people who work so hard to keep the website running. Their removal was non essential and has caused a great deal of frustration.

Thank you.

I have wasted so much time going through and reinserting all the horizontal lines (which don't get imported correctly even if they exist in the uploaded document), time which could be better spent writing. A technical fix for the horizontal line uploading
