Save Birmingham's Historic City Federal Building sign now
This petition is to notify the city of Birmingham, Alabama, that we, the undersigned, demand that the city take immediate action against Samuel Barber of Decatur, Georgia, owner of the City Federal Building at 2026 Second Avenue North in downtown Birmingham, Alabama for neglect and disregard of the aforementioned property. This 27 story skyscraper, built in 1913, is the tallest neo-classical building in the South and has fallen into disrepair and abandonment since Mr. Barber took possession of the property in 1997. While other historic structures in the Center City have been converted to other uses, such as residential units or boutique office space, this tower has sat vacant, deteriorating and falling prey to vandalism. We, the undersigned, demand that the city take the building via eminent domain or other methods and sell the tower a developer will who restore the building to its former glory. Currently, this beautiful building is a hazard to public safety and is an eyesore on the Birmingham skyline and on the streetscape of Second Avenue North. In order to continue the revitalization of our beautiful downtown, something must be done immediately.
