Save the Arts and Creative Economy in Virginia sign now

We ask our elected leaders to prevent the significant loss of funding for arts-based communities across Virginia which is presently under consideration in the current house budget proposal. If this proposal is passed it would cause devastation to our vital creative economy as well as profound detriment to the quality of our educational system.

The House of Delegates voted to eliminate funding for the arts in their budget proposal; the Senate Finance Committee voted to preserve funding. If the house version passes, Virginia would be the only state without a Commission for the Arts. The Virginia Commission for the Arts provides vital funding and support for artists and arts-based initiatives throughout the commonwealth. The arts build communities, facilitate quality education for all and foster innovative, resilient economies.

Each dollar spent to support the work of an arts-based organization returns seven to the local community. It makes good fiscal sense to continue to fund this portion of our society which has proven integral to the continued health, expansion and sustainability of our economy on a multitude of levels. The different versions of the 2010-12 budget bill approved by the two houses of the General Assembly are now in a Budget Conference Committee to resolve the differences.

We propose that the members of the Budget Conference Committee (as listed below) find alternative measures outside of vital funding for arts, education and the creative economy to supplement this proposal.

House:

Lacey E. Putney (I-Bedford) - (804) 698-1019, (540) 586-0080
