To Urge University of Chicago President, Robert J. Zimmer, to Sign the "Amethyst Initiative" and Join its Coalition of Respected Leaders in Higher Education Advocating to Rethink the Drinking Age sign now

We, the undersigned students at the University of Chicago, hereby urge President Robert J. Zimmer to join with fellow presidents and chancellors of respected universities and colleges across the United States who have signed the Amethyst Initiative (www.amethystinitiative.org) that recognizes the need to rethink the drinking age.

Numerous presidents and chancellors representing an eclectic coalition of academic institutions from Middlebury to Sewanee and from Syracuse to Duke have come together to:
1. Support an informed and dispassionate public debate over the current effects of the 21-year-old drinking age.
2. Consider whether the 10\% highway fund incentive encourages or inhibits that debate.
3. Invite new ideas about the best ways to prepare young adults to make responsible decisions about alcohol.
4. Pledge themselves and their institutions to playing a vigorous, constructive role as these critical discussions unfold.

We students urge President Zimmer to seek a renewed debate. We students see the illogic of the current drinking law as the lone exception to the legal age of adulthood in the United States; 18-year-olds can vote, marry, own businesses, enter into binding contracts, and sacrifice their lives for their country but, according to politicians, dont have the maturity to purchase a drink.

The 1984 National Minimum Drinking Age Act:
*Has not caused the reduction in alcohol-related traffic fatalities.
*Has not produced a realistically enforceable policy.
*Has not curtailed youth alcohol consumption.
*Has not decreased binge-drinking.

The 1984 National Minimum Drinking Age Act:
*Has tied the hands of state governments in considering more effective alternatives.
*Has mandated abstinence-only alcohol education that does not result in significant constructive behavioral change among students.
*Has fostered rampant violation of and disrespect for law with the prevalence of fake IDs and alcohol runs from of age individuals for their younger friends.
*Has marginalized the role of parents in the process of teaching and encouraging children to make responsible decisions about alcohol use.

Prohibition didnt work in the 1920s. Prohibition wont work now.

Lets encourage President Zimmer to take a stand for progressive, intellectual, and beneficial debate!
