We Stand Up in Supporting the Continuation of Hudson's Service Learning! sign now

The Service Learning Program at Hudson High School is in Jeopardy!! We need your support!!

Just recently the Levy failed for Hudson City Schools; in attempt of passing a levy that would pay for a variety of expenses throughout the district. In response to this levy failure the schools must dramatically cut back on their budgets and spending for educating all students. Our districts school board and superintendent are looking for ways to trim the budget. Hudson Service Learning is now in danger of being cut.

For those of you who aren't sure of what Service Learning is, its a wonderful stellar program striving to educate students through social justice, incorporating English, Government and Community Service into its curriculum. Service-learning is a teaching method that combines service to the community with classroom curriculum. It is a hands-on approach to mastering subject material while fostering civic responsibility. Service Learning strives to have students become involved with the community, while preparing them for rigors of college classes and life outside of the classroom.

Students have time weekly to reflect on their service experiences. Reflecting helps to make the connection between classroom and community learning, ensuring the students understand the extent to which they can impact positive changes.

Service-learning builds stronger academic skills while it also accommodates many different learning styles. In this course students learn the role they can play in their community while it also encourages lifelong civic participation. When relating academic activities to real-life experiences, service-learning improves workplace skills and enhances personal development among youth. Service-learning gives students a sense of competency; they see themselves as active contributors to their community and learning experiences rather than passive recipients of adult decisions.

Here are a list of Service Learnings exceptional accomplishments and stats showing the difference it makes:

-2010, The Hudson School district has recently been recognized by the state of Ohio as a model district for Service Learning Programs.
-Over the past 9 years, we have brought in over $125,000 in grant money to the school district
- Last year, the Service Learning class of 2010 performed 14,875 hrs. worth of service.
-Each hour of service is worth $20.85 per hour
-We are a model grant 1 of 7 schools in the entire state of Ohio that are given this title.

Please sign this petition in support of Hudson High School Service Learning. Stand up to make a difference. We are honored by this program and its advantages. Taking this class away, getting rid of one of the teachers, and/ or splitting it in half would take away from the students and what we stand for. Not to mention decreasing the size of the class to make it smaller would be more expensive. Letting this class go would take away from our academics and for some, the doors to a great future. The future is up to us and how we will make it. We are all the faces of Hudson. This is our future. We live for good education. We WILL NOT let this class go down. We will fight for what makes our school a better place, our academics greater, and for the Service Learning program, whose teachers have taught and transformed us over the year. We would not be the same people we are today without them. The knowledge gained from this class will be treasured for the rest of our lives.

Stand up for Service Learning! Please sign this petition supporting the Continuation of Service Learning. You'd be making a huge difference in our classroom and community!! It will only take a minute.

Thank you,

Victoria Palmman
Service Learning Class of 2011!
